How to Research a Product Before Importing It

2 min read

How to validate demand, competition, margins and regulations before you import a product from China, so you invest in products that can actually sell.

The most expensive import is a product nobody buys. Before you contact suppliers, a few days of research can tell you whether a product has demand, room for margin and requirements you can meet. This article gives you a practical framework.

1. Demand

  • Search data: how many people search for the product, and is interest growing, stable or seasonal?
  • Marketplaces: best-seller rankings, number of reviews and how fast new listings gain reviews.
  • Social media: whether the interest is lasting or a short trend.

Look for steady demand rather than a sudden spike that may fade before your goods arrive.

2. Competition

  • How many sellers offer the same or a similar product?
  • Are big brands dominating, or is there room for smaller sellers?
  • What do negative reviews complain about? They show you how to make a better product.

3. Margin

Estimate the selling price from the market, then work backwards:

  • Landed cost per unit. See how to calculate landed cost.
  • Marketplace or payment fees.
  • Fulfillment and shipping to the customer.
  • Marketing cost per sale.
  • Returns and defects.

If the margin only works in the best case, the product is risky.

4. Regulations and logistics

  • Does the product need certifications, tests or special labels in your market? See CE and RoHS certification.
  • Does it contain batteries, liquids or magnets that complicate shipping?
  • Is it bulky or fragile, which makes logistics expensive?
  • Are there import restrictions or anti-dumping duties? See customs clearance basics.

5. Supply

  • Are there several capable suppliers, or only one?
  • What are the typical minimum quantities and lead times?
  • Can the product be improved or customized to stand out?

6. Test before you scale

Validate with a small order or dropshipping before you commit to large volumes. Real sales data is the best research.

A simple scorecard

Rate each product from 1 to 5 on demand, competition, margin, regulatory complexity, logistics and supply. Compare products on the same scale, and drop the ones with a very low score in any area, even if the rest look good.
